For decades, the governments of the USA have fought a war against socialist Cuba using every means possible, including assaults, sabotage, deadly enterprises like the Bay of Pigs invasion or Operation Mongoose (leading directly into the rocket-crisis), not to mention numerous assassination attempts on Fidel Castro. The books cites evidence from newly declassified government documents to prove all this. But the book is also about the close cooperation of the CIA, the mafia and corporations like the Bacardi-Empire, and about Cuban exiles that became terrorists and often had close ties to the White House. That was – and still is – the hidden war.
Another part of the war against Cuba is fought by presidential orders, laws passed in Congress, embargos, economic sanctions, stop of delivery of food and medicine and by exerting leverage on other countries. This kind of terror has a lot to do with economic strangulation. And both kinds of terror are accompanied by psychological warfare, the destabilisation campaigns against Cuba coming via the ether and becoming ever more frequent and sophisticated, but also more brutal.
More than ever the Pearl of the Antilles is threatened by the world’s greatest military power that 46 years ago declared a state of siege over Cuba and its 11 million people.

Schäfer bietet im Anhang seiner Recherche Faksimiles von Dokumenten,
auf die er sich stützt. Zu den politischen Analysten, denen er ebenfalls
das Wort gibt, gehört der Artikel "Warum die USA Kuba fürchten"
von Seumas Milne in der britischen Zeitung "The Guardian" vom 31.
Juli 2003. Milne kommt zum Schluss: "Die US-Feindschaft gegen Kuba kommt
nicht von seinen Mängeln auf dem Gebiet der Menschenrechte, sondern von
seinen sozialen und politischen Erfolgen sowie der Herausforderung, die seine
unbeugsame Unabhängigkeit den anderen Satellitenstaaten der USA und des
Westens demonstriert." zum Anfang
Wer Schäfers Recherche einseitig findet, muss freilich auch die Fakten
widerlegen, auf die sie sich stützt....

Schäfer war in den siebziger und achtziger Jahren für elf Jahre als Korrespondent der DDR-Nachrichtenagentur ADN in Washington akkreditiert. 1975 nahm er an den Anhörungen des Untersuchungsausschusses des Senats (Church-Ausschuß) zu US-Mordplanungen an ausländischen Führern teil. In der Einleitung zu diesem gemeinhin als "Mordreport" gekennzeichneten Bericht (Alleged Assassination Plots Involving Foreign Leaders; US-Government Printing Office, 1975) wurde festgestellt, dass die Beweise keinen Zweifel daran lassen, "dass die Vereinigten Staaten in mehrere Mord-Komplotte verwickelt waren", und zwar gegen Patrice Lumumba, Rafael Trujillo, Ngo Dinh Diem, das kubanische Führungstrio Fidel und Raul Castro und Che Guevara und den chilenischen General René Schneider.
Die Legitimation für diese Anschläge stellte die von 1955 bis 1970
offiziell gültige Direktive NSC 5412/2 des Nationalen Sicherheitsrates
der USA dar, durch die die CIA beauftragt wurde, "den internationalen
Kommunismus zu bekämpfen, zu reduzieren und zu diskreditieren".
Der Church-Ausschuss konnte (oder wollte) zwar keine Beweise erbringen, dass
die Präsidenten Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953-1961), John F. Kennedy (1961-1963),
Lyndon B. Johnson (1963-1969) und Richard Nixon (1969-1974) diese Mordpläne
an ausländischen Führern autorisiert hatten. Es wurde jedoch darauf
hingewiesen, dass nach dem Prinzip des "glaubhaften Dementis" (plausible
denial) verfahren wurde, wonach ein Präsident über bestimmte Verbrechen
wie angeordnete Morde deshalb nicht informiert sein muss, damit er sie auch
