Poland was the greatest centre of Jewish culture and had the greatest Jewish population of the world. The 3 million Jews living here not only formed a religious community, but also a national one. Jewish was seen as a nationality and Jews were considered a people. Many outstanding personalities of Poland and other countries were actually Jews. But Jews were mostly seen as competitors and as foreigners or even as enemies. Through no fault of their own they often stood in the centre of conflicts. Not even the Holocaust brought Poles and Jews closer together. In the after-war conflicts, Jews were again victims, again those who had survived could not live in peace. After several waves of mass emigration, the age-long history of the Jewish people in Poland came to an end – but not the disputes about it. This book wants to introduce the German reader to this interesting and explosive complex of problems.
